Preface

Traditional Chinese Medicine Yearbook of China is sponsored by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and its predecessor was Yearbook of Traditional Chinese Medicine which was first published by Shanghai College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1983. In 1989, the Yearbook was renamed Traditional Chinese Medicine Yearbook of China. Thirty-seven volumes have been consecutively publishedso far. In 2003, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine decided to divide the Yearbook into two volumes, administration volume and academic volume. The administration volume is compiled by China Press of Traditional Chinese Medicine, while the academic volume is compiled by Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine Yearbook of China (Academic volume) (hereafter referred to as the Yearbook) is a comprehensive, advanced, authoritative and historical reference book fully reflecting the academic achievement and progress of China traditional Chinese medicine (hereafter referred to as TCM), also considered as a reference book of nationalhistorical archives.

The Yearbook 2020 is based on published national TCM scholarly journals and best essays presented in national academic conferences in the last year. Each item included was finalized through discussion amongeditorial board member of the Yearbook, editors, writers and relevant experts. The Yearbookhas to go through initial evaluation by editors, review by deputy editor-in-chief and editor-in-chief, and final approval by editorial board of the Yearbook.

Both paper version and web version of the Yearbook are available. The paper version consists of columns such as Special Reprint, Special Papers, University President Forum, Academic Achievements, Academic Progress, Events and Index. The Appendix lists Top 50 Journals for Citation Frequency in the Yearbook, Top 50 Universities (Colleges) for Citation Frequency in the Yearbook, Top 40 Medical Institutions for Citation Frequency in the Yearbook, etc.The web version covers the newly published TCM specifications, principles and standards, the project list of TCM awards, the study of new ingredients and components of Chinese material medica, the lists of newly published TCM books and TCM journals, and classified catalogue of TCM scholarly journal articles. The content indexes of TCM articles contain over 2,000,000 Chinese characters with multi–way retrieval function, providing easy access for readers to search TCM literature of the last year.

Year 2019 is the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. This Yearbook specifically creates a new section of “Development History of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 70 Years” includingAchievements of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 70 YearsRevitalization and Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 70 YearsFlower of Traditional Chinese Medicine Blooming in the Belt and Road and Spread of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Overseas Development in the Era of New China, unfolding an overall development process of medicine, healthcare, scientific research, education, industry, culture and international communication since the founding of New China.

The academic progress part closely follows continuous report of key projects in various disciplines. TheYearbook has over4,300citations from articles published on TCM journals, and essays sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Science and Technology and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The Preface and Table of Contents of the Yearbook are written in both Chinese and English.

General Secretary Xi Jinping gave important directives for the opening of “National Conference of Traditional Chinese Medicine”:follow the development law of TCM, inherit the essence, keep innovation, accelerate modernization and industrialization of TCM, insist attaching equal importance to TCM and western medicine, promote the complementary and harmonious development of TCM and western medicine, drive high quality development of TCM and industry, lead TCM to the world, give full play to the unique advantages and effects of TCM in disease prevention and treatment, and contribute to building a healthy China and realizing the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.The Yearbook is essential for academic inheritance and innovation. It will not only serve the contemporary but also benefit the future. All the editors, with tremendous rigor and enormous sense of historical mission, will further improve the compilation quality and increase the academic influence of the Yearbook to enable it to play full role in supporting state affairs upon recording history and foreseeing the future by reviewing the past, making the Yearbook homeland and brand of TCM science.
